Once again Tomahawk Speedway was smooth and ready for racing as the drivers and fans assembled for a great night of racing on Friday, June 26, 2009. With temperatures nearing the 90 degree mark during the day and cooling to about 65 degrees by race night end, the fans were treated to a comfortable night of racing.
Eagle River, Wisconsin’s, Jason Zdroik, once again wowed the crowd as he pulled away lap-by-lap from the rest of the field to take the win in his WISSOTA Midwest Modified. Baraga, Michigan’s, Jeff Klopstein, led flag-to-flag as he battled the rest of the field and went on for the win in the WISSOTA Street Stock Division. Brantwood, Wisconsin’s, Wayne Eskola, was again victorious in the Pure Stock Division while Phillips, Wisconsin’s, Mike Warga, succeeded in getting his first win in the Bandit Division. Two divisions of Quads joined in the race night fun with Jesse Maki taking first in the MX Division and Travis Manasheski taking first in the Flat Track Division.
After finishing second in his heat to Mickey Nosser, Jason Zdroik started fifth in the feature with Nosser starting fourth leaving everyone anticipating great racing action in the feature. The fans would not be disappointed as Zdroik led by the end of lap two replacing early race leader Bruce Belland. Nosser would battle Rick Przyblyski for three laps for the third spot as Zdroik began to put on a clinic. By lap four, Nosser had moved up to third, Belland ran second and Zdroik led the field by six car lengths.
Zdroik continued to lead by mid-race, stretching his lead even further as Belland and Nosser battled it out for second with Przyblyski in the mix as well. With five laps to go, it was all Zdroik as he widened his lead by almost half a track. In the end it would be Zdroik with the win, followed by Belland, Nosser, Przyblyski, and John Johnson, Jr. who ran a consistent fifth most of the feature.
Jeff Klopstein, Jr. started on the pole for the Street Stock feature and never looked back despite a race that saw multiple restarts. As Klopstein led, Bill Froelich, who had started second, ran second for the first four laps to be replaced by Marcus Simonson by lap five. Meanwhile, Keith Troutman who had started fourth, continued to run fourth as Jeff Hoogland, who had started fifth and John Kallas, who had started seventh fought it out for fifth.
Mid-race saw Klopstein still in the lead with Kallas in second, Simonson in third, Hoogland in fourth and Troutman in fifth. With five laps to go, Klopstein still led, Hoogland had moved to second, Kallas ran third, Simonson was fourth and, you guessed it, Troutman was fifth. By race end, Klopstein had taken the checkered with Hoogland, Kallas, Keith Troutman and Matt Troutman, who had started third, rounding out the top five.
Tomahawk Pure Stocks numbers have come around and a field that was only comprised of four or five cars last season is now anywhere from thirteen to fifteen cars strong each race night this season.
KJ Fox led the field to the green in the Pure Stock Division, leading the first three laps. Wayne Eskola, track point’s leader, started third and by lap four had taken the lead. By mid-race, Eskola continued to lead with JJ Woller, who had started ninth, on his tail, along with Joe Wolfe, who had started sixth. By race end, Eskola had taken another win with Woller, Wolfe, Ken Schram, who had started seventh, and KJ Fox rounding out the top five.
Travis Smith was on the pole for the Bandit Division with Terry Collins at his side. It was Mike Warga, who had started third, who would make an impressive early move to take the lead with just one lap into the books. Warga hung on despite repeated attempts by Marcus Dunbar, who had started fourth, Logan Lannet, who had started fifth, and Brit Bromann, who had started sixth, to pass him. By race end, Warga had taken the win with Bromann, Dunbar, Lannet, and Smith rounding out the top five.
The top three feature winners in the MX Quad division were: Jesse Maki, Cory Beyer, and Jeremy Shore. In the Flat Track Quad Division Travis Manasheski, Kyle Komarek, and Wayne Eskola made up the top three.
Racing resumes on Friday, July 3, when all regular classes will once again be in action sponsored by Miller Beer. Also, there will be fireworks once again this year and if last year’s display was any indication, fans will be in for a treat!
