Zdroik and Kallas Repeat At Tomahawk Speedway

Although the track received over three fourths of an inch of rain throughout the day on Friday, Tomahawk Speedway hosted another great night of racing on June 19. The track was amazingly smooth, very fast, and in very good shape due to pre-rain preparation. Many drivers commented on the condition of the track at race time and how well it held up throughout the night.

Roger Walker led the field to the green at the start of the race. Jason Zdroik, who had started fifth, showed his strength early, taking the lead by the end of lap one. Zdroik led with Walker in second and Mickey Nosser, who had started fourth in third. By the end of lap three it was still Zdroik and Nosser running first and sec ond, but Steve Brown, who had started third, ran third replacing Walker for that spot. By lap ten, Walker had regained the third spot, dropping Brown to fourth, while Zdroik and Nosser continued to run first and second.

With five laps to go, it was Zdroik, Nosser, Walker, Dennis Mikkelson, who had started sixth, and Brown. As the cars were completing the sixteenth lap, Brown’s car suddenly spun (his steering wheel came off) coming out of turn four sending the car into the front stretch wall. With Brown out of competition, the race continued with Zdroik winning in his Big Johnson Racing-sponsored car. Rounding out the top five were: Nosser, Walker, Mikkelson, and Mark Kralicek, who had started eighth.

Bill Froelich was on the pole for the start of the Street Stock feature and led the first seven laps while Jeff Hoogland, who had started fourth, and John Kallas, who had started fifth, fought it out for second. With lap eight winding down, Kallas made a move for the lead, taking the lead, dropping Froelich to second as Hoogland hung on to third. Meanwhile, back in the pack Matt Troutman, who had started third, and Cliff Houle, who had started sixth were fighting it out for fourth.

With five laps to go, Kallas had increased his lead over the rest of the field by a full turn while Hoogland, Froelich, and Houle fought it out for second. By race end, Kallas had stretched his lead to a full front stretch to take the win in his Coor’s Light-sponsored Streeter. Hoogland, Froelich, Houle, and Keith Troutman filled out the top five.

The Pure Stock feature was a good one with a curious twist at the end. John Jarrett, Jr. led the field to the green flag and led the first four laps of the feature with numerous cars exchanging spots throughout the rest of the field. Two successive cautions occurred early in race when Ken Schram’s car had a tire separate from the wheel and Zach Onsen’s car spun on the restart in turn one. With the cautions out of the way, Wayne Eskola, who had started tenth as a result of not running a heat race, a result of a broken axle in hot laps, had been patiently working his way up through the field and took the lead by completion of lap five.

Eskola then went on to lead the remaining laps, nearly wrecking during the checkered flag lap when three cars, about to be lapped, got tangled up in front of Eskola who had lost his brakes. Here’s the twist. Eskola ended up being disqualified because he forgot to go through tech and the win went to Chris Nylund, with Travis Friske, John Jarrett, Jr., Alex Durand, and Zach Onsen making up the top five.

Marcus Dunbar led the field to the green in the Four Cylinder Bandit Division and led the first thirteen laps. Through lap thirteen, Dunbar was hounded by Jay Wilberding, who had started fourth. After racing door to door for five laps, Wilberding was finally able to get around Dunbar for the eventual win. Rounding out the top five were: Dunbar, Kasey Gross, who had started sixth, Michael Warga, who had started third, and John Barlowski, who had started second.

Racing resumes on Friday, June 26 when once again the racing card includes the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds, WISSOTA Street Stocks, Tomahawk Pure Stocks, Tomahawk Four Cylinder Bandits, and two classes of ATV's "Quads"
